Many of us look to the last Monday in May as a day off to catch our breath and relax from the chaos of the end of the school year. This year, the holiday certainly felt a bit different. It felt a bit isolating to not attend a Memorial celebration or not to gather as a family. However, I would like to encourage everyone to take some time to remember those who have given their lives for our great nation.
By the Numbers:
Civil War (1861-1865)- 498,332 soldiers lost
Spanish American War (1898) 2,446
World War I (1917-1918)- 116,708
World War II (1941-1945)- 405,399
Korean War (1950-1953)- 54,246
Vietnam War (1959-1975)- 90,220
Desert Storm (1990-1991)- 1,948
Operation New Dawn (2010-2011)- 66
Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present)- 2,220
Each U.S. service member who lost their life left behind family and friends. Some left by choice and some by draft, but all left to defend their country as members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard.
